More Americans considering México for Retirement - Rosarito is affordable, beautiful and close to the US!

By: Charles Sipe
Economic pressures and rising costs of living have increased the number of Americans 50 and older actively considering relocating outside of the United States to retire. With its close proximity to the US and its affordability, Mexico is the number one international destination for US residents retiring outside the country.
Increased growth in real estate development in Mexico - and in particular, real estate developments targeted towards ex-pat retirees - have led experts to believe that the number of Americans relocating to Mexico has increased significantly since 1999, when the US Department of State estimated that 1 million Americans were living on either a part-time or full-time basis in Mexico. As the number of US baby boomers reaching retirement age continues to grow significantly, many experts believe that an increasing number of US retirees will continue to find Mexico's coastal communities an attractive option for several reasons:
Affordability
44% of US retirees living in coastal Mexico report living comfortably on $1,000 or less a month, substantially less than the $43,000/year a senior living in New Jersey would need for food, shelter, transportation and health care. Unlike many US-based seniors who found their quality of life impacted by the evolving global economic crisis and US recession, 42% of US retirees in coastal Mexico stated that the economic recession had no impact at all on their retirement plans. With thousands of miles of under-developed or undeveloped coastline, US retirees can find affordable ocean front homes for a fraction of the cost of a similar home in the US.
Proximity to the US
Many popular retirement locations in Mexico are within seven hours drive of the US-Mexico border and a large portion of coastal communities can be reached within 1-2 days driving time from the US border. After relocating, many US retirees travel back and forth between Mexico and the US regularly, often several times a year. (Velia's comment: Of course Rosarito is only 25 miles from the Border!)
Quality of Life
Many US retirees choose to live in Mexico's coastal cities because of the moderate climate and relaxed lifestyle. Still, relaxed and laid back does not mean that there isn't an abundance of activities. Mexico coastal living offers retirees a diverse range of cultural and outdoor activities - from fishing to golf, cultural festivals, art galleries and classes...life in Mexico for many retirees is filled with a variety of activities and with a lower cost of living, many US retirees find that their retirement dollars go farther in affording a better quality of life than they might find in the United States.
Popular coastal regions for US retirees in Mexico include Baja California (Mulege, Loreto, La Paz, Todos Santos, Los Cabos, Rosarito, Ensenada), Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Cozumel) and Sonora (Guaymas, Rocky Point). Not surprisingly, these areas of Mexico are also popular tourist destinations. Still, housing is affordable and more than three-fourths of US retirees surveyed owned their homes in Mexico. Homes near or on the ocean can range anywhere from condos listed for below $100K to lavish estates (which would command multi millions in the US) listed for above $500K.
