Outstanding Rosarito Students Chosen to Go to San Diego Zoo
By: Jack E. George
Some of the brightest students in México live right here in Rosarito Beach. This was recently determined by a national competition, conducted throughout the country, to identify students earning the highest grades in multiple subjects. It was determined that a number of these students attend Ejido Mazatlán Escuela Primaria. Since this competition involved thousands and thousands of students this was a great honor for the students as well as for our community.
In recognition of these students they were recently invited by the Rotario Rosarito Club, and the La Jolla Rotary Club, to visit the San Diego Zoo. The Rotario Rosarito group rented a Mexicoach to transport the students. Sixteen students, four teacher/chaperones and Sonja Stump, representing the local Rotary group, traveled to San Diego. Although it took a while to cross the border this did not bother the group of students who looked forward to the big day ahead. Most of the students had never been to a zoo before so this was an extra special treat.
Once the group arrived at the zoo two members from the La Jolla Rotary group joined them. They spent time with the students in the Petting Zoo and Snake Park area. They also provided them with box lunches. The students enjoyed their treats while riding around on a double-decker bus trip that had been arranged for them to tour the zoo. The presentation on board the bus was in Spanish so they were introduced to all kinds of different animals as they traveled around.
The students, who ranged in age from first to sixth grade, had a great time. Stump, one of only a few English speakers on the trip, enjoyed the students and said they tried to teach her the names of different zoo animals - in Spanish. She said she was impressed with the overall excitement the group displayed as well as how well-behaved they were. Stump has a surprise for each participant - she took an individual picture of each student to share with them. This picture will hopefully remind them of a very memorable day at the zoo.
